Sanitary Waste and the Environment
Bin it, Do not Flush it
We should all take responsibility for the environment, and many people are unaware that sanitary products should never be flushed down the toilet.
Did you know that a tampon takes six months to biodegrade and a plastic sanitary towel liner lasts forever.
Flushing sanitary towels down the toilet pollutes coastlines and may result in blocked drains.
The Environment Agency found that from a survey of 452 river and canal sites, 34% of sites had sewerage derived litter, such as sanitary towels.
Landfill versus Incineration
All sanitary waste must be collected by a registered waste carrier, however, some companies will landfill that waste.
Many service companies prefer the waste collected from sites to be disposed of by incineration, while this can be more costly, it has greater benefits for the environment.
If your company wishes to be environmentally friendly, please say no to landfill and specify that all sanitary waste removed from your premises is incinerated.
